Abstract. The motion of a particle in the field of potential forces under the condition of large friction which is nonlinear with respect to the velocity is studied. It is shown that a periodic external force of small period results in a modification of the initial potential function: a term linear with respect to coordinate is added. Due to modification, local minima of the potential function can change their position and depth. Moreover, some minima can dissapear and new may appear. The effect strongly depends on amplitudes and relative phase shifts between individual harmonics the periodic external force is composed of. The effect is absent if the periodic force has only one harmonic and/or the friction is linear with respect to velocity.
